Police have confirmed that a 5-year-old New Mexico girl was killed Sunday after a shooting in southwest Albuquerque. Police say she was struck at least one time.
Detectives said the girl did not live in the trailer. The girl was just staying the night in the front room facing the street when someone fired into the trailer.
“It appears at this point that the offender intended to shoot someone else, but blindly shot into a residence and tragically killed this young girl,” APD Chief Harold Medina said. The child was transported to a hospital where she died from her injuries.
Cecily Barker, Deputy Chief of the Investigative Bureau for Albuquerque Police, says officers got a call around 6 a.m. after shots were fired at a home in the 2700 block of Paseo del Canto Drive SW.
“These types of incidents are tragic,” Barker said. “They hurt our community.”
We also spoke with, Marissa Wilson, a woman who lives in the area with her children.
“It’s scary that something like this happened close to home because of the fact that these kids are the ones that suffer for all of this stuff,” said Wilson.
She said if this would’ve happened on a weekday, there’s a possibility more kids could have been injured in this situation.
“There are kids lined up, going to the park, getting ready to catch the bus. There’s a lot of kids that walk across the street to the school,” said Wilson.
In an update Monday night, Albuquerque police chief Harold Medina said two Kia Soul vehicles believed to be connected to the fatal shooting were recovered.
“While we can’t go into the circumstances of the recovered vehicles, we have reason to believe they may be connected to the drive-by shooting that took the life of an innocent, 5-year-old girl,” APD Chief Harold Medina said. “We also believe several people have information that can help our detectives with this investigation. We urge those individuals to come forward and do the right thing. Help us bring justice to Galilea Samaniego.”
