The last time anyone had seen 30-year-old Makayla Fay Meave-Byers, she was leaving home on September 15, possibly for a date, climbing into a white Chevrolet pick-up truck with tinted windows.
Meave-Byers “supposedly” had plans to go out with the bald White man with a dark beard in the driver’s seat, who has not been identified, Pottawatomie County Undersheriff Travis Dinwiddie said.
Joining investigators with drones and search dogs, Meave-Byers’ family participated in the search for their loved one, the undersheriff says. On Wednesday, Meave-Byers’ cousin found her body a few miles from her home. She was wrapped in what Dinwiddie described as waterlogged “old pieces of carpet” in a nearly four-foot drainage culvert in a creek running under a road in Macomb, Oklahoma. (The medical examiner confirmed the body as Meave-Byers’ on Friday.)
Her cause of death and approximate time of death have not yet been determined, the undersheriff says, but, he says, her death is “absolutely” foul play.
Meave-Byers, a teacher’s aide at Macomb Public School, was the mother to six children including four step-daughters and two adopted children.
“She’s a great mother,” Andria Meave, Meave-Byers’ older sister, told the outlet. “It’s all she cares about.”
Investigators believe that she left home voluntarily around 5:30 p.m. last Friday, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, said in a previous Facebook post before her body was found.
Meave-Byers, who was in an open relationship with her husband, had not been seen alive since she left on the possible date. The truck she was last seen in has an extended cab, but investigators do not have a license plate number, according to her previous missing persons report.
Worried that they could not contact her – an unusual behavior for the family-oriented mother – her family reported her missing the next day, according to the report.
Dinwiddie says that the balding White man with a beard, who was described to him as about 6 feet tall, and driving an older white pick-up truck, was “supposedly” her date for the evening,
“We haven’t been able to locate anyone like that to try to verify anything,” he said.
