A 16-year-old New York girl who had been missing since late August was found dead Saturday in Rochester, and her death has been ruled a homicide, according to reports.

Officers responded Saturday to a report of a body found in the woods off Vanguard Parkway.

The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the body as Jakarah Lopez-Moore, who had been reported missing by her family Aug. 29 after leaving her home on Weld Street two days prior.

Police said it’s unclear how long Lopez-Moore’s body had been in the woods, but it was “in a state of decomposition in which a scientific identification was required.”

The cause of death has not been released.

The circumstance surrounding Lopez-Moore’s disappearance remain under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call 911, the Rochester Police Department Major Crimes Unit at 428-7157 or Crime Stoppers at 423-9300. Tips can also be emailed to MajorCrimes@cityofrochester.gov.
