A 26-year-old Louisiana father of a three-year-old girl who was fatally shot Monday afternoon was booked on Tuesday on suspicion of negligent homicide, among other charges, Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office records show.
Virgil Ordon was jailed on counts of negligent homicide and possession of a firearm by a felon in connection to the death of his daughter, Promyse, about 3 p.m. Monday in the 3100 block of Rue Parc Fontaine in New Orleans.
Abreeka Ordon, the little girl’s mother, said in an interview Tuesday that she received a call Monday from home while she was at work, alerting her to the tragedy.
“All I could do was drop my phone and scream as loud as I can: ‘No, not my daughter!’ I couldn’t believe it. I just dropped. I dropped.”
She called Promyse “a happy child,” the middle sibling with two brothers, ages 2 and 4. She’d wanted to be Minnie Mouse for Halloween, and Abreeka Ordon said she’s is planning to bury her daughter in a pink Minnie Mouse casket.
Amy Smith, a neighbor who has lived at Parc Fontaine for two years, says she heard people discussing the case as police combed the building Monday. She said word around the complex was that the child found a gun while left alone and shot herself.
“It’s sickening,” Smith said. “If they had a gun, why wasn’t it locked up? I get you need protection, but kids roam. They’re curious.”
Virgil Ordon has prior convictions for simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He awaits a bond hearing on Wednesday.
