The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and officials in Terrell County are actively investigating a double homicide in Bronwood, according to reports.
Terrell County Sheriff’s deputies say that 27-year-old Gary Bailey III called police Wednesday morning to report he had shot his grandparents, Donna Bailey and Gary Bailey I. When deputies got to the scene, they found Gary Bailey III sitting out on the porch and arrested him.
The GBI reports that his grandparents were found dead in their home with several gunshot wounds along with their pet cat who was also found dead with a gunshot wound.
A neighbor says he heard about five to six shots fired around 1 a.m. and called the police. He said the man who shot his grandparents is a veteran and suffers from PTSD.
Gary Bailey II, the suspect’s father said on Thursday that the suspect does not have PTSD, but that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia psychosis after being dishonorably discharged from the Navy three years ago. He would not provide documentation to back up that claim.
The neighbor also says the grandfather has had to call the police before for other domestic disputes.
An incident report from the Terrell County Sheriff’s Office that dates back to June 2023 says the grandparents called deputies after they said their grandson was slamming doors in the house and shoved his grandfather. The grandson had been living with his grandparents for two years.
In that incident, the grandparents didn’t press charges but told deputies, “They wanted the grandson out of the house to get help,” and ” They are scared of him because he talks to people that are not there all the time and has his mood swings from the PTSD.” The report continued with, “They are afraid he might do more than he did and really hurt them next time.”
The suspect is currently being held in the Terrell County Jail on charges including felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, exploitation and intimidation of an elder person and aggravated animal cruelty.
