The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office has arrested the husband of a teacher’s aide while investigating her September death, according to reports.
The El Reno Police Department and other agencies assisted in the arrest of Frank Byers on complaints of first-degree murder, unauthorized removal of a dead body and desecration of a human corpse. All complaints concern the death of 30-year-old Makayla Fay Maeve, who went missing in mid-September and whose body was found days later, the department said on Facebook.
“This is not a conviction and all parties are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law,” the department clarified in the post.
The arrest comes more than a month after Maeve was first reported missing in mid-September.
According to the sheriff’s office, she was last seen about 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 15, wearing a Macomb Public Schools T-shirt and blue jean shorts at her Macomb home.
On Sept. 20, a body was found wrapped in a carpet south of Oklahoma Highway 59B and Hamilton Road and was identified as Maeve on Sept. 22.
Here is why investigators say he is their prime suspect.
He says Makayla and him are in an open marriage because she wants to experiment.
“When she told me she wanted an open marriage, I was I was upset but I didn’t want to lose her so I agreed to it,” Byers said.
Makayla’s family says that’s not true.
Investigators say his affairs led to the separation.
On Sept. 15, Byers says Makayla went on a date and vanishes. The guy she reportedly leaves with, still unknown to deputies.
“She told me right before she left that it is none of my business where she goes or who she sees,” Byers said.
Byers – through tears – says he searches for Makayla around the clock.
“Pure hell,” Byers said. “I am constantly worried about her, messaging her and texting her. Even today, I called her.”
Investigators say Byers was only pretending to be looking for his wife.
“She’s not here but it’s just the fact that,” Byer said. “I have her number and her phone is on somewhere and it would be nice to hear her voice.”
Investigators say he shot her Sept. 15, rolled her in carpet that he borrowed from his neighbor and dumped her in a ditch near their property.
A story that’s now in the hands of the courts.
Macomb Public Schools, where Meave-Byers was reportedly a kindergarten teacher’s aide, released a statement regarding the tragedy.
“Unfortunately, the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday that Makayla’s body has been recovered, as officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death,” school officials said. “Our hearts are heavy as we grieve this tragic loss of a beloved Macomb Public Schools educator and parent. Makayla cared deeply for our students and families and she will be greatly missed.”
