A 36-year-old Arizona man is in custody after a shooting left a woman dead late Thursday night in Phoenix, according to reports.
Authorities confirmed Cori Braggs was taken into custody in connection to the death of 34-year-old Ebony Phelps.
Investigators say just after midnight, Phoenix police officers were called to a hospital after Phelps was brought in with a gunshot wound. However, Phelps died a short time later from her injuries. While at the hospital, authorities found out the shooting initially happened at an apartment complex near 17th and Missouri Avenues earlier in the night.
Sgt. Brian Bower said police arrived and were able to identify an apartment where Phelps was known to stay. Additional units, including SWAT, responded to contain the area and see if anyone was inside the apartment. Tactical units eventually forced entry into the apartment, but no one was there. However, police found evidence of a shooting inside the unit.
As the investigation continued, authorities discovered Braggs was inside a home near 19th and Glendale avenues. Detectives and tactical response teams surrounded the home and began negotiating with Braggs, eventually taking him into custody.
Detectives remained at the complex throughout the day, speaking with other residents and trying to gather information about what happened. A neighbor shared video with local news that shows two people carrying someone to a car around midnight. Police didn’t confirm if it’s directly connected to the shooting but say officers are still looking for the car used to drop her off at the hospital.
“We don’t know exactly who dropped her off at the hospital,” Bower said. “We know that a car pulled up, but we don’t have a description that we want to put out at this time.”
