A 25-year-old Mississippi man is being held on a $1 million bond, accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend in the head in the early morning hours of Monday, according to reports.
Verona Police Chief Marsenio Nunn said officers were dispatched to the Lazy Acres Trailer Park on the south end of town around 4 a.m., Jan. 8, in reference to someone being shot. When officers arrived at the Lesa Avenue address, they found 24-year-old Tremya Darden with a gunshot wound to the head.
Darden was transported to the North Mississippi Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead just after 11 a.m., according to Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green.
Nunn said the woman’s boyfriend was present on the scene and told officers that he dropped his gun, and it went off, accidentally shooting his girlfriend. 25-year-old Dandre Edward Lydale McGinister was taken into custody and booked into the county jail under an investigative hold.
McGinister had an initial appearance before Verona Municipal Judge Sumeka Thomas on Tuesday, where he was formally charged with first-degree murder. The judge found there was enough evidence to bind the case over to the next Lee County Grand Jury.
Since McGinister has ties to Michigan and Arkansas and could be a flight risk, the judge set bond at $1 million.
At the time of his arrest, McGinister was out of bond for stealing a car in Lowndes County. Nunn said he will speak with the district attorney’s office about having that bond revoked.
