On September 6, 2024, before 2 a.m., police say a shooting occurred at an apartment complex in the 8100 block of Woodway Oak Circle in Charlotte, North Carolina. Upon arrival, officers found a woman lying on the ground outside of a vehicle, deceased.

The victim was identified as 23-year-old Jenyah Kishawne Skyye Wright.

Allegedly, a man called 911, saying his girlfriend was shot in the neck and “losing blood.”

Records state that as officers arrived at the scene 25-year-old Charles Wittington Hodge Jr. had been kneeling over her, holding a shirt to her wound, applying pressure. Officers observed that Hodge Jr. was not wearing any shoes, and had blood-soaked socks on. Hodge Jr. was taken to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) headquarters where he was interviewed by homicide detectives.

Allegedly, Hodge Jr. admitted he had been dating Wright for about two months. Records state Hodge Jr. told CMPD detectives he had picked Wright up from a local bar after a night out with friends, and as they were heading home, they were approached by a masked man in the road, who “asked for a lighter” and then “pulled a gun” on him.

Hodge Jr. allegedly told police a struggle for the gun ensued, and that’s when two shots went off into the vehicle, hitting Wright. Hodge Jr. claimed the masked man ran away and that’s when he called 911 for help. Hodge Jr. denied walking into a grassy area in the apartment complex, between two buildings.

While processing the crime scene, detectives located bloody footprints leading away from Wright and away from their vehicle. Detectives followed the footprints into a grassy area, where with the help of a K-9 Unit, located a Glock 40 caliber pistol in the woods. Records state the chamber of the pistol was a live 40-caliber Hornady S&W round.

While processing Hodge Jr.’s vehicle, a 40-caliber Hornady S&W DCC was reportedly found inside. Wright’s injuries showed she was shot at close range.

Based on the totality of evidence in this case, Hodge Jr. has been charged with murder. Records state that collected evidence contradicted the events Hodge Jr. claimed happened.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. Anyone with information on this homicide case is asked to contact Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
