Ciara Grimes was only 18-years-old when she was shot and killed by her boyfriend, 17-year-old Jermaine Brown on May 9, 2018. Her murder came 4 days after she had got a no contact protection of order against him.

The two had been dating for sometime and Ciara had just found out she was pregnant.

They were both at a friend’s house on Delamaine Drive in Rochester, New York when he shot Ciara in the arm. Then he and their friends dragged her outside in a driveway leaving her for dead.

Jermaine went on the run until he was finally captured in May 15, 2018. Occupants of the home refused to answer the door for police. They were removed from the residence when the department’s SWAT team made entry. Initially, they lied and said they didn’t know what happened.

“Everyone makes choices in life, but at the end of the day, he’s going to have to pay for what he did,” Grimes’ mother, Erica Perez, said after leaving City Court. “My baby is gone. I will never see her again and I have to move on day by day.”

Perez said her daughter was “being beaten for a long time before we even knew about it.” She said her daughter had kept the domestic violence she experienced to herself because she was embarrassed that the encounters occurred.

Jermaine was only sentenced to 2 to 6 years in state prison. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter. The manslaughter sentence will be served concurrently to a sentence of three years in prison and two years post-release for a separate conviction on a third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance charge.
