The mother of a 2-year-old who was shot in the head says he is going to survive.

Malcolm Mai was hit while sitting inside his home on Jefferson Avenue in Des Moines on Monday night at 10:48 p.m.

Five men are facing attempted murder charges. Des Moines police say the home was intentionally targeted. Malcolm and his 17-year-old aunt were the only ones home at the time. Police say they were not the targets.

Malcolm’s mother, Buk Mai, says she was not home at the time and does not know the suspects.

“They shot up my whole house. The crazy thing is I don’t know none of these boys. What was the point? There is nothing but kids that live there. Just me, my mom, my little sister, my little brother and Malcolm that lives there,” said Buk Mai, Malcolm’s mother.

Mai says her son had to undergo surgery to remove the bullet but does not appear to have any brain damage. She says he is in a medically induced coma and his right arm is partially paralyzed.

“He’s my only son. My world. Everybody loves him. He’s so adorable,” said Mai.

Mai hopes the community will support her fundraising efforts for her son’s medical bills.
