It started out as a robbery but ended with 29-year-old Tosha Lampkin being raped, robbed and burned alive inside the trunk of her car.

Jarret Ardoin testified during Brandon Davis’ first-degree murder trial that Lampkin begged them not to kill her, saying she had a 10-year-old child. But Davis and Dwight Bacon did it anyway in fear she’d remember the license plate number of the car in which they were riding.

“They didn’t intend to kill her. It was just robbery,” Ardoin told the 10-woman, two-man jury of the robbery from which they gained less than $100.

“She promised she wouldn’t tell. They did it to get rid of the evidence.”

Ardoin, who shared a cell with Davis for eight months in 2005, recounted conversations he had with Davis about the killing of Lampkin. They communicated verbally and by letters about the events leading to her death.

Davis told Ardoin, who is no longer in jail, that he forced Lampkin, at gunpoint, to drive from David Motel in Bossier City to a location where they raped her then put her in the trunk of the vehicle, Ardoin testified.

They then drove the car to Kuhn Road, where they raped her a second time then set the car on fire, he said.

It started out as a robbery but ended with 30-year-old Tosha Lampkin being raped, robbed and burned alive inside the trunk of her car.

In a letter Ardoin read to the court Davis said, “I’m just a petty robber that … stuck his feet off in some deep (mess).”

As Ardoin recalled, in detail, what Davis said about raping Lampkin, some of the victim’s family members left the courtroom, while others held back tears.

Jurors heard statements from recorded interviews with detectives where Davis repeatedly denied his involvement in the Lampkin’s death and continuously said “I did not kill that woman.”

By the end of the third interview, jurors heard Davis admit he was at the crime scene but said Bacon killed her.

He told investigators Bacon started the fire in the back seat of the car with a box while Lampkin was alive in the trunk.

“I thought that if I said something, he would shoot me because he had the gun the whole time,” Davis told investigators. He was emotional, shedding tears during the interview. Investigators said he showed remorse during questioning.

Lampkin, of Houston, Texas, was visiting relatives in Bossier Parish when she vanished April 23, 2005. She left the motel to get something to eat about 3 a.m. and never returned.

Authorities found the Nissan Altima on fire about 5:30 a.m. and later discovered Lampkin’s charred, unidentified body in the trunk.

A representative from the Caddo Parish coroner’s office confirmed to jurors the victim was alive as the vehicle burned.

The two men were tried and convicted and currently serving life sentences in a state prison for murder.
