A woman accused in the 2020 death of her boyfriend’s 4-year-old daughter has been indicted on a charge of murder, with court records alleging that she suffocated the girl with an ammonia-soaked towel.

Melynda Davis was initially charged with injury to a child and tampering with evidence in the November death of 4-year-old I’Yanna Allen. A Harris County grand jury indicted Davis last week on the murder charge.

Investigators believe Davis attacked the child with an unspecified blunt object. Then strangled and suffocated her with the ammonia-soaked towel, according to court documents. She then hid the child’s onesie, a towel and dog training pads to conceal a crime, according to authorities.

The murder charge was pending the results of an autopsy.

Police found the child with blunt force trauma at an apartment in the 11200 block of East FM 1960 in Huffman, Texas. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Court records show she also had a fresh laceration and bruising to her head. There was also burn marks on her elbow, buttocks and hand that were healing.

Davis was arrested last November and has remained at the Harris County Jail on a combined $200,000 bond for the prior charges. She was convicted in 2008 to two felony forgery charges.

Davis is expected in August to return to court.
