A man and woman were found dead Sunday in what authorities are investigating as a murder-suicide.

The investigation began when 42-year-old David James was found dead on County Road 114 in Chambers County’s Lafayette community with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead on the scene by Chambers County Coroner Jeff Jones.

It was then that Chambers County authorities asked the Lee County Sheriff’s Office to do a welfare check on James’ wife at a residence in the 6000 block of U.S. 29 North in Cusseta, said Lee County Coroner Bill Harris.

Once authorities arrived on the scene, they found 42-year-old Quentinna James unresponsive. Harris said it appeared Quentinna James had been shot and she was pronounced dead on the scene.

Harris said it’s unclear what transpired leading up to the deaths, but investigators believe that David James shot his wife and then went to Lafayette before turning the gun on himself.

Both bodies have been taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for autopsies. The incident remains under investigation by the Lee County Coroner’s Office, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office.
