A 2-year-old girl’s father is now charged in her shooting death Wyoming, Michigan.

2-year-old Khalise Lynn Brewer, who was staying with her father on Wednesday, was found dead after police were called to the house on a report of shots fired.

Wyoming police on Friday, February 11 said 26-year-old Seninta Grover Jalaal Parks was arraigned in the hospital on charges of murder and several weapons charges. Parks was hospitalized after allegedly shooting himself on the day Brewer was killed.

No public access via video was available for the arraignment.

Police said Parks’ daughter, Khalise, was staying at his Meyer Avenue SW apartment temporarily on Feb. 9 when he allegedly shot her and then shot himself.

He survived and was taken to a hospital where he was last known to be in stable condition, according to police.

“The men and women of the Wyoming Department of Public Safety and our entire community continue to grieve the loss of Khalise,” police said in a statement.

Family of Khalise, during a Thursday candlelight vigil, said the shooting came out of the blue and they’re struggling to understand the reason.

“I just can’t believe it. I can’t believe my daughter’s gone. I can’t,” the young girl’s distraught mother, Kambria Brewer, said. “Khalise impacted so many. Everybody she met she made smile. To think that smile, that I’m not going to see that smile on her face, on a picture but not on her face, it’s crazy.”

As of Friday afternoon, police have yet to publicly disclose a motive for the fatal shooting or details about what led up to the toddler’s death.

Police were called to the Meyer Avenue SW address after a downstairs tenant in the two-unit apartment reported that a bullet came into their unit from above.

Parks was on parole at the time of the shooting, police said.

Parks is facing the following charges:

  • Open murder, a felony punishable by life in prison;
  • Discharging a firearm in a building causing death, a felony punishable by life or any term of years in prison;
  • Felon in possession of a firearm, a felony punishable by five years in prison;
  • Two counts of felony firearm, a felony punishable by two years in prison.

He is being held with no bond.

According to Wyoming police, he has been transferred to the custody of the Kent County Sheriff’s office.
