A 13-year-old girl was killed in a shooting at 5th and Rogers Sunday night in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A 10-year-old girl was also injured, police said.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s office identified her as 13-year-old Shanaria M. Wilson.

Milwaukee police were called to the shooting around 9:40 p.m., where they found the child. First responders brought her to the hospital, where staff pronounced her dead.

The 10-year-old girl, identified as Shanaria’s little sister, also suffered life-threatening injuries and is now in the hospital in a serious but stable condition. An 18-year-old man suffered non-life-threatening injuries, is in the hospital and is expected to survive, according to MPD.

A neighbor said she heard the shots and at first thought it was fireworks. She said she brought the injured 10-year-old, Shyier, to her home and sat her on the porch. The little girl had been shot multiple times and was in shock, said the neighbor.

Up and down the block, people told local news that they are angry, confused, and that there should not be a memorial here for Shanaria Wilson. She should have never been shot, they said.

One resident showed us surveillance video on a smartphone but said she didn’t have permission to share it. You can see a group of kids playing and then suddenly scatter.

Family says Shanaria was a student at Audubon Middle School. They say she was independent and had a bright future. She loved dancing, TikTok, and doing hair. Her stepfather, Reginald Moton, says his heart is broken.

Police have been walking the block where the girls were shot.

“We’re out here to show we’re out here, we care,” MPD Captain Patrick Pajot said. “We’re here for the community. We’re here to support the community.”

That hasn’t eased the concerns of many who live here.
