A 12-year-old Alabama boy was killed and a female victim was injured after gunfire erupted Wednesday night in Montgomery, police said Thursday.

Montgomery police and fire medics responded to the 2800 block of Cherry Avenue around 9 p.m. Wednesday on a call of people shot, said spokeswoman Capt. Saba Coleman.

Before police arrived on the scene, two victims were taken to a local hospital in a private vehicle, Coleman said.

12-year-old Nelson Harris sustained a life-threatening gunshot wound, police said, while a female victim suffered a non-life-threatening injury.

Nelson was later pronounced dead.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remained under investigation Thursday.

Anyone with information on the homicide was asked to call CrimeStoppers at 334-215-STOP, Secret Witness at 334-625-4000, or Montgomery police at 334-625-2831.
