A 17-year-old Ohio high school student is dead after a shooting in west Toledo on Saturday afternoon, according to Toledo police.

Another 17-year-old boy was taken to the hospital.

Police say Marvelous Walton and Marcquise Waites were in a car on the 3800 block of Lockwood Avenue near Berdan just after 2 p.m. when each of them was shot.

Walton was pronounced dead at the scene. Waites was taken to the hospital where his condition is unknown at this time.

At this time there are no known suspects.

A neighbor, Cayden Robinson, was just down the street from the shooting when it happened and said it was shocking to witness.

“I was ducking down on the ground, thinking we were getting shot at cause it was so close,” said Robinson. “Like we got kids here. There are kids all around the neighborhood. Like this neighborhood, these are nice houses, these are good family homes we don’t really have problems like that.”

Marvelous Walton would have been a senior at St. Francis de Sales High School in the fall where he was on the varsity football team. According to St. Francis coach Mike Blochowski, Marvelous was a “great kid” and was well-loved by his coaches and teammates.

St. Francis released a statement on the passing of Walton on Saturday evening.

In it, school president Fr. Geoff Rose said “Having lost one of our brothers, we must come together as never before.”

On Sunday afternoon the school held a prayer service at Gesu Catholic Church on Parkside Blvd.

In an emotional ceremony, dozens of Walton’s friends and classmates took time to remember and honor him.
