The Mississippi case against two teenagers accused of murdering their mother’s fiancé in Jackson is moving forward.

A Hinds County grand jury will consider whether to indict the brothers, including the 14-year-old, who police said pulled the trigger.

During a Tuesday preliminary hearing, a prosecutor described 18-year-old Jamarie Taylor and his 14-year-old brother as brats for their role in the shooting of their mother’s fiancé, Hekemia Kelly.

Kelly was shot and killed in his home on Thousand Oaks Circle around 2 a.m. on June 19. According to investigators, Kelly and the teens’ mother had gotten into an altercation. They said that led them to drive to Kelly’s home and shoot him.

Detectives testified in the preliminary hearing that Jamarie Taylor gave the handgun to his younger brother. He hid it in his waistband and took it to Kelly’s home and put it on a bed. The two got into a fight and the teen grabbed the weapon and fired at Kelly, according to detectives.

“As far as did he deserve that? No, and like he said, they should have stayed in a child’s place and if the mother was any kind of mother, she would have made sure that her children were in a child’s place,” said Kelly’s cousin, Sharon Willis.

Willis came to court Tuesday wearing a shirt honoring Kelly’s memory. She said she was glad the judge did not to set a bond for the teens. They both will remain behind bars.

The defense attorney argued in court the shooting may be self-defense and that Kelly fired at the teen first.
