Police officers responded to surround a crime scene in Miami, Florida with their guns drawn, after a man, who enjoyed to work with children, was found dead.

According to authorities, police received a Shot Spotter alert at 3:47 a.m. in the area of Northwest 72nd Street and 13th Avenue.

Police said officers arrived at the scene to find a man, later identified as 28-year-old Maurice De Andre Bellamy, who had been shot in the head outside of his family’s home.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His mother spoke to local news about the tragedy, saying her son didn’t deserve this.

“He was a wonderful young man, well known to the community. An extremely hard worker,” said Lashika Nelson, victim’s mother.

Nelson believes his car, a bright orange Dodge Challenger, may have made him a target. His body was on the ground near it with its drivers-side door open.

“If it was the car that they were after, then I’m sure that he would have given it up because we can always get another car,” said Nelson.

According to police, he was killed while getting out of his car. Miami-Dade County Public Schools officials confirmed that Bellamy was an employee of the district who currently worked at Lorah Park Elementary School.

A motive for the shooting is unclear.

Anyone with further information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
