A Georgia man is in jail after shooting and killing his wife during a domestic dispute, then having a shootout with deputies in Augusta, according to the Richmond County Coroner.

Shortly before 10:45 Wednesday night on March 15, 2023, Richmond County Deputies were dispatched to the 200 block of Brandywine Place in reference to an unknown situation. That’s in the Fitzroy Town homes off Boy Scout Road in Augusta.

A few minutes later, dispatch received a call of shots fired at the same location.

When deputies arrived on scene, they tried to communicate with Shawn Gunn inside the home so that he could come outside to speak with them. Gunn refused and later shot at deputies.

Deputies returned fire striking Gunn at least one time. He was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for treatment of his injuries. No deputies were injured.

When law enforcement went inside the home, they found a woman dead. She’s been identified as 48-year-old Commen Gunn. The Richmond County Coroner confirms she was shot dead by her husband, Shawn.

As of noon Thursday, the GBI was still on the scene investigating the more than two dozen shots fired.

Shawn Gunn has a lengthy criminal history. His most recent arrest was for DUI back on November 18, 2022. He has been charged as far back as 2014 on crimes such as simple battery family violence, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, family violence battery, criminal trespass, and aggravated stalking.
