A Pennsylvania man is accused of shooting and killing his fiancée’s mother during an argument Wednesday night at his Long Pond home.

Pocono Mountain Regional Police said 43-year-old Damien Hoehler was arrested in the murder of 59-year-old Diane Strohl.

Hoehler is engaged to Strohl’s daughter, police said.

Hoehler was arraigned on charges of homicide, possession of a weapon, simple assault and two counts of reckless endangerment. He was ordered held in Monroe County Prison without bail, records show.

Hoehler was intoxicated and handling a firearm Wednesday night at his home in the 100 block of Shannon Drive in the township, police said. He began threatening people with the gun, police said.

Hoehler and Strohl began to argue, and the argument turned physical when the gun fired, wounding Strohl, police said.

Police were called at 10:27 p.m. for a woman shot and not breathing at Hoehler’s home. Arriving officers encountered Hoehler at his front door, and police said he was secured at that time for the officers’ safety.

Officers then went into the home and found Strohl lying on the first floor with a wound to her upper chest. Police tried life-saving measures on Strohl, but she succumbed to her injury, the department said in a news release.

Police said they found a firearm “within the general area” of where Strohl was found, and other family members were in the home’s basement, uninjured.

The coroner would determine the cause and manner of Strohl’s death.
