A 30-year-old Texas man is behind bars for a shooting in Dallas that killed an 11-year-old boy and injured a woman early Saturday morning.
Jakeith Huntley has been charged with capital murder. According to court records, Huntley has faced multiple aggravated assault charges in the last 10-plus years.
The shooting happened just after 2 a.m., when officers arrived in the 6400 block of Royal Lane to find a boy and woman had been shot.
The boy, identified as Jeremiah Tracy Green, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman was taken to a hospital in stable condition. Family members confirmed that the injured woman is the boy’s mother, and said she was in surgery Saturday.
Police identified Huntley as the suspected shooter. He was later located by Glenn Heights police and taken into custody hours later. Huntley was taken to DPD headquarters to be interviewed.
Online records show Huntley already faces an aggravated assault serious bodily injury charge out of Denton County for an incident in 2021.
Huntley was also arrested in 2016 for aggravated assault also in Denton County.
He served four years in prison, before being released in 2014 for an aggravated assault in McLennan County.
No further details have been released about what led up to the shooting, but police said Huntley was known to the victims.
A family member spoke to reporters through the home’s door surveillance camera Saturday afternoon.
A woman, who identified herself as Green’s grandmother, answered from the hospital.
She said her daughter and her grandson were the two victims, and that Huntley is her daughter’s ex-boyfriend, adding that he showed up unexpectedly overnight.
She remembered hearing gunshots from a different room in the house.
“That stuff doesn’t really happen here,” neighbor Alex Barnes said.
Saturday, people who live in Preston Hollow are still shocked after an 11-year-old boy was shot and killed inside a home.
Barnes was up late, taking care of his newborn son, when he heard sirens.
“In his nursery, I could see blue lights. I came outside, 20 cop cars, ambulances, fire trucks, a big commotion,” he recalled.
Unbeknownst to him, Barnes walked outside to a crime scene.
“Terrifying because it’s right across the street,” Barnes said.
Family members of the victims showed up later on Saturday to help clean the inside of the house. Bullet holes and an evidence marker were seen on one of the windows.
“The window is directly across from me. Who is to say it could have caught us,” Barnes said.
As a new father himself, Barnes said he cannot imagine what his neighbors are feeling.
“That terrifying parental instinct kicks in, but also you empathize on what they are going through,” he said. “The only thing you think of is protecting your kid 24/7.”
Neighbors said they would often see multiple kids playing in the front yard of the home where the shooting happened.
