A Mississippi man was arrested after two people were shot and killed in Jackson on Saturday, according to authorities.

Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS) Spokesperson Bailey Martin said Capitol Police responded to a report of a shooting around 1:00 p.m. near Jefferson Street.

Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart identified the victims as 27-year-old Joshua Spann and 23-year-old Auden Jubilee Simpkins.

27-year-old Jordan Kyle Cummins was apprehended Saturday afternoon after officers responded to shots fired and found two victims dead with gunshot wounds on Jefferson Street in front of the Mississippi State Fairgrounds around 1 p.m. Saturday.

“Suspect fled the scene, went back to Rankin County, we notified Rankin County of the suspect’s vehicle and name, and he is now in custody,” Capitol Police Chief Bo Luckey said. “We have the suspect, vehicle located and weapon used located.”

The chief said that because it was a domestic dispute there was never a threat to those attending the parade.

“Unfortunately, this is one of those incidents where it was stemming from a domestic that occurred in the parking lot. It’s not something that somebody came here to the parade to cause damage,” Luckey said. “This was not something where the suspect randomly sought out targets. This is something where the white male suspect and his girlfriend were in an altercation in the parking lot, unfortunately these victims intervened and that’s when the shots fired occurred.”
