A Florida woman has been charged with attempted murder following allegations that she deliberately struck her ex-boyfriend with a vehicle, subsequently dragging him down the street, resulting in life-threatening injuries.
On July 24, the Coral Springs Police Department received a call from the medical staff at Broward Health North about an injured man who claimed he had been intentionally struck by a vehicle in front of his residence, located near Northwest 39th Court in Coral Springs.
The man told medical staff the driver of the vehicle that allegedly struck him was his ex-girlfriend and mother of his child, 26-year-old Carolina Sosa Martins.
According to the police report, the victim told officers he was inside his bedroom when he heard a loud noise and discovered that a ceramic tile had been thrown through his window.
He explained to officers that when he went outside to investigate the incident, he encountered Martins attempting to leave in a rented black Toyota Corolla, which the victim claimed she had stolen a couple of days prior from him while he was at his aunt’s residence in Deerfield Beach.
Records show the victim told police a heated argument ensued between himself and Martins over the car, leading to Martins accelerating the vehicle at a high rate of speed, deliberately striking him before he could get out of the way.
The victim told officers he was dragged along the pavement for an estimated distance of 150 feet (approximately two houses east of his residence) before breaking his sweatshirt free, which was caught in the car door.
The victim was rushed to Broward Health by a friend, where doctors diagnosed him with severe injuries, including a subdermal and epidermal brain bleed, a temporal fracture on the left side of the skull, and a broken left scapula.
His condition required intensive care and continuous monitoring.
Law enforcement later reviewed texts between the victim and Martins that were exchanged following the incident.
In the texts, the victim informs Martins he is on his way to the hospital due to her actions, to which she responded with death threats.
Police immediately placed a warranty for Martins’s arrest, and she was taken into custody and arrested the following day.
According to the warrant, Martins was charged with attempted felony murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon (the vehicle), and throwing a deadly missile (the ceramic tile) into a private residence; she was also charged with making written death threats.
Martins remains in custody at the Broward County Main Jail.
