A 24-year-old Maryland man was convicted of killing a woman, her 3-year-old daughter, and the woman’s unborn child on August 1, according to a news release from the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office.

Devon Sample was sentenced to three consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 70 years.

Sample was convicted of three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of use of a firearm, and one charge of a crime of violence against a pregnant woman.

“The vile actions of this defendant deserved nothing less than the maximum penalty possible under the law. The trauma endured by this family is unimaginable,” said Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan Bates.

In June 2020, police were called to the 200 block of Boswell Road for a woman who was unresponsive in the front seat of a car. Inside, officers found Shiand Miller in the driver’s seat, shot twice.

3-year-old Shaniya Gilmore was found lying on the center console between the seats, appearing to have been trying to move from the back seats to the front seats, according to investigators. Gilmore was also shot twice, according to prosecutors.

Investigators found video from a nearby home that show muzzle flashes at Miller’s vehicle at about the time neighbors say they heard gunfire, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors say no 911 call was made. Sample’s fingerprints were found inside the car, according to prosecutors.

Miller’s unborn child was 32 weeks old at the time Miller was killed, according to prosecutors.
