A Texas man believed to be the suspect in a woman’s murder last week during a domestic dispute has died after shots were fired between him and law enforcement near Houston’s Third Ward on Wednesday, according to reports.
According to Houston and Harris County officials, the murder suspect believed to be Dimitri Humphrey, was found near the 2600 block of Calumet Street.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said shots were exchanged between law enforcement and the suspect, who reportedly died at the scene.
During a Wednesday press conference, officials said the suspect arrived in a white Jeep at a park on Calumet Street and got out of the vehicle.
When officers made a plan to go after him, the suspect took off running and started firing his gun.
At least five officers reportedly returned fire, and the suspect collapsed. No officers were injured in the shooting.
Humphrey was accused of shooting and killing 26-year-old Shantavia Reddick, identified as a third-grade teacher at Smith Elementary, and her dog during a domestic violence incident with his girlfriend.
Reddick had reportedly gone to help a friend leave an alleged abusive relationship and was shot to death in the Sept. 9 incident on E. Mossy Oaks Road.
Deputies later released Humphrey’s photo in hopes of finding him and said he had fled the scene in a white Jeep Wrangler with the license plate number TFN-4278.
According to information from HCSO last week, Humphrey was wanted on unrelated felony warrants, and murder charges were in the process of being filed against him.
