A 12-year-old Indiana boy died and a 14-year-old boy is recovering from his injuries after a shooting on Friday night in South Bend, according to reports.
Officers were called around 9:30 p.m. to the area of Indiana Avenue and Prairie Avenue on reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a 12-year-old boy, identified as Josiah Small of South Bend, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
While officers were investigating, they were notified that a second victim, a 14-year-old boy, was also suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries that were said to be not life-threatening.
“Whenever there is a shooting in our city, there’s always going to be a semblance of worry, and that’s justified,” said Ashley O’Chap, media liaison for South Bend Police. “Whenever you are trying to enjoy a Friday night, and you hear shots ring out or you hear a call go out on the scanners such as this, it’s alarming, so we have faith that our officers and detectives will do what they do best.”
Small’s autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.
There is also no word on a suspect at this time, as the Violent Crimes Unit is leading the ongoing investigation.
