Alabama mother Jessica Bortle was sentenced to one year and one day in state prison for the fatal incident involving her special needs 14-year-old daughter inside a Pensacola, Florida hospital in 2021, according to reports.

A judge sentenced 36-year-old Bortle on Wednesday. She also received three years probation and is required to attend parenting classes.

In late July, Bortles was found guilty of battery and child abuse — both lesser charges than she was originally facing.

Prosecutors alleged Bortle slammed a bedside meal table into her daughter’s mid-section while the daughter was recovering from an infection in a Pensacola hospital.

The arrest report stated Bortles told police that she “slammed the hospital table into Singletary’s abdomen and then leaned onto the table with her weight” after she became angry after Singletary cussed at her over color crayons.

Bortle, in trial, said that the incident was an accident.

A chief medical examiner testified the injuries to Jasmine Singletary included fractured ribs on her left side and a damaged liver. They also said blunt force trauma to the torso was the cause of death.
