A 47-year-old New York man was arrested for murder with help of a local SWAT unit Saturday morning, police said.

Just before 8 p.m. on Friday, September 29, Utica Police and Utica Fire units were dispatched to the 100 block of Boyce Ave where a man was shot.

When they arrived, they found the male victim, 44-year-old Curtis Henry, and he was immediately transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital where he died of his injuries.

During the investigation, it was learned that Henry and the suspect, James Beard, of Utica, engaged in an argument resulting in Beard shooting Henry at least one time.

Beard was located with the assistance of METRO SWAT comprising members of the Utica Police Department, Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, and New Hartford Police Department, Beard was taken into custody without issue.

Early Saturday morning, Beard was charged by the Major Crimes Unit with:

  • Murder
  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon

The investigation remains ongoing.
