On Friday an Ohio judge ruled that 17-year-old Kaitlyn Coones will be tried as an adult. She is accused of murdering 53-year-old Nicole Jones.
Kaitlyn Coones is charged with aggravated murder, murder, tampering with evidence, and abuse of a corpse.
The foster kid from Canton was dating the victim’s 33-year-old son Jonathan Jones. The prosecutor said the teen gave her boyfriend an ultimatum to get rid of his mom because she was interfering in their relationship. Investigators believe the victim may not have known the teen was living in her son’s bedroom.
“Kaitlyn had told Jonathan, that they needed to do something about his mother because she was preventing them from being together and she gave him five hours to do something about her, and at one point in the interview, she even mentioned to killing her,” said Detective Albright with Sylvania Township.
Coones was in the custody of Stark County Children’s Services. In April she went missing from the group home.
Police claim the teen sent a text message to a group home nurse saying she had killed two people and was on the run, that’s when Canton police told Sylvania Township police to do a welfare check on Jones and they discovered she was missing.
Investigators say Jones picked up his girlfriend at a restaurant and brought her back to the home he lived in with his mom.
“She went outside retrieved a rock and when Nicole Jones was standing in front of the refrigerator in the kitchen, unaware of Kaitlyn’s presence bludgeoned Nicole Jones a number of times and strangled her,” said Lucas County Prosecutor Andy Lastra.
Investigators say the couple threw the body in a dumpster at an apartment complex, that was later taken to a landfill. Police believe they may never find her.
Jonathan Jones had previously been convicted of having an inappropriate relationship with Coones, so he was wearing a GPS monitor that helped police to create a timeline in the murder case.
Coone’s attorney told the court he wasn’t supposed to contact her.
In May U.S. Marshals arrested Jonathan Jones for kidnapping Coones. They found the couple in Mexico, which police say is where they ran off to after dumping the body.
Jones is also charged with the murder of his mother.
