A 25-year-old Massachusetts man appeared in court Monday to face a first-degree murder charge in the 2021 death of his 6-week-old infant, according to reports.

Prosecutors told the court the baby boy, Cobain Patterson, died from blunt force trauma inflicted by his own father two years ago inside a Centerville home.

On or about Sept. 7, 2021, Barnstable police received a 911 call at approximately 10:25 a.m. to report an unresponsive infant. Upon arrival, officers found the infant unresponsive, discolored and cool to the touch, investigators said.

CPR was performed while en route to Cape Cod Hospital. The infant was flown to a Boston area hospital but later died.

In court on Monday, prosecutors described what Patterson said to the boy’s mother after Cobain woke up fussy and was left alone in the bedroom with his father.

“Defendant walked out of the bedroom, indicated, ‘I got him to sleep,’ and then went outside to smoke cigarettes,” Cape and Islands Assistant District Attorney Tara Cappola said in court.

Prosecutors said both of Cobain’s tibias were fractured, injuries they said were consistent with somebody twisting them in some fashion.

“He had broken ribs on the left side,” Cappola said. “His skull and his brain were hemorrhaged. His eyeballs were hemorrhaged.”

Patterson also has outstanding warrants in Dedham District Court for allegedly abusing another one of his children after Cobain’s death.

He is being held without bail.
