The 13-year-old Florida honor roll student accused of horrifically stabbed his own mother to death dozens of times, had researched the best way to carry out the grisly crime, according to investigators.

The revelation was made during a hearing at a Miami-Dade court on Thursday during the testimony of a Detective with the Hialeah Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit. While on the stand, Detective Joseph Elosegui alleged that Derek Rosa had searched Google for info on knives and human anatomy on the same night he had allegedly stabbed 39-year-old Irena Garcia a total of 47 times.

The boy’s search history included:

  • “The carotid artery image diagram.”
  • “What is the best place to stab someone?”
  • “Is a small knife good for killing?”
  • “Is it easier to kill someone with a small knife?”
  • “Can a knife cut through bone?”

Rosa also searched for information on how to obtain a machine gun.

The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s office also released photos from the crime scene last week, which show the murder weapon – a knife with the tip broken off, as well as numerous surveillance images that show Garcia holding her newborn daughter and later showing her son standing over her as she was sleeping next to the 14-day old child.

Rosa had called 911 around 11:30 p.m. on October 12, 2023, telling the operator that he had stabbed Garcia to death and that he sent photos of the crime scene, including a selfie taken moments after the crime, to a friend online and told him, “Goodbye.” Officers who arrived at the family’s apartment found the mother with multiple stab wounds to her neck.

Investigators have not publically said what Rosa’s motive may have been.

Rosa is currently being held without bond at the Metro West Detention Center.
