A 29-year-old man accused of killing a West Virginia State Police trooper pleaded not guilty to murder Tuesday, according to reports.

Timothy D. Kennedy had his bond denied during his first appearance in Mingo County Circuit Court since his arrest Friday night.

Kennedy is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Sgt. Cory Maynard in the Beech Creek area of Mingo County.

State Police said Kennedy shot and killed Maynard as he responded to a shooting complaint with two other troopers in the 4200 block of Beech Creek Drive.

The incident sparked a massive manhunt that lasted for several hours.

Investigators said 39-year-old Benjamin Adam Baldwin was found to be seriously injured after being shot with a rifle. Troopers said Baldwin was taken to CAMC General Hospital to receive medial attention and is reported to be in stable condition.

Kennedy was taken into custody just before 11 p.m. West Virginia State Police said he was caught in a stolen vehicle at a command post that had been set up in the area.

Kennedy is being held at the Southwestern Regional Jail with no bond set.
